Shape a Take or not...
There are two ways I teach a dog to like to keep articles in their mouth; Pick-Up or Shape a Take.
Here is a demo of shaping a take. I do a few different hand positions. The goal is to keep the rate of reinforcement high and to capture the clamp down commitment as much as you can.
When to use a Pick-Up as an Article Hold Strategy?
- If duration is a new skill for the team
- Taking something has been poisoned by aversive methods
- Clicker timing is rough and a new concept for team
When to Shape a Take to start a hold behavior?
- Dog has no interest what so ever in putting something in its mouth
- Play behaviors with an article do not work
- You are clicker savy
What is this Pick-Up Strategy you are talking about?
I created an on-line mini course for my clients to help them break through article hold duration. The main stream method of shaping the take was cumbersome for some of my clients. Backchaining the pick-up creates a nice mechanism that cultivates a hold and a take without much fuss.
